Just wanted you to know that I spent the better part of the early evening looking back at your son's past and I have to say that you have done a fantastic job engaging him and encourging him to talk.

I myself grew up with hearing difficulties back in the early seventies. I was told by my adoptive mother that I basically didn't hear until I had my surgery when I was seven.(I was adopted around that time) I must say that I am very happy to hear that parents are more inforned now then back then and can do something about it.

Needless to say I didn't start talking until that time but with the help of the many speech and language specialist my parents paid good money for no one can tell I ever had a problem. I am grateful that your son and so many children that are in his situation are treated early and can benifit from phonic and other teachings that require a child to have early hearing.

When my own son was entering school I was personally at a loss as to how to help him with those types of skills. I lucked out with a Richard Scary video that did the work for me and he never even noticed I was not able to help him. Now he is twenty and of course fully aware of my hearing loss(surgery did not fully correct the problem, he always thought my hearing aids were my way of hearing him in another room...LOL)

I do have to comment on something you might not understand in the sign language world though. I am going to use my mother and her reaction to my speech therapist teaching me sign language while learning to talk. Back in the day people(and even some people today)regarded sign lanuage as a showing others that the ones signing were not intellegnet and my mother reacted as many did back then. She would often slap my hands if I sighned and within time intructed the therapist to stop teaching me because "she didn't want me to be labled. Maybe that why you are getting message from that community. They feel that in some way they feel that you might feel the same as they did back in the day. I am not saying they are right, by any means, I am letting you be aware of what might be going on in their heads.

Again, great job in loving Drew and showing him that with all that you and your family do for him.
