Speech Therapy

Since Drew began school in September, I haven't had an opportunity to see any of his therapy sessions. It's funny how I went from being so involved in every little thing in his CI/therapy life to really having little involvement. Sure, I get weekly notes, and am given "homework" to do with him in the evenings or on the weekends, but it really is different from our life the previous three years!

I decided that I wanted to see how Drew was doing in his therapy sessions. Drew's teacher and SLP are fabulous (seriously, we are so lucky to have such wonderful people working with Drew) and they are so willing to let parents observe their classroom and small group sessions. Here is Drew, in action, at one of his most recent therapy sessions:

I can't believe how big my little boy is getting! He just amazing.

He IS amazing! He has a really good attention span for a three year old, too. I loved the use of the chick ("pop up") for getting that final /p/ sound. You have a great team, and a great little boy, too!

That's so great they let you observe. Not only do I not get notes or homework from the SLP at Mari's school, I don't have any clue what they are working on. Occasionally I will go to school just to corner her and ask for details. In general though I've just given up and rely on our private AVT.

Honestly, if I couldn't see his CI I'd never know he had any hearing issue. He is amazing. He works so hard. I know your family does a lot of work with him as well.

Keep up the great work Drew!!!

It really helps when all the people involved in therapy are connected and parents definitely need to stay updated. We have a great early intervention teacher for Jiya. Infact, once every few months she will visit Jiya's session with our private therapist just to make sure that all the people involved are on the same page.

Aiden and I watched this together this morning and I reminded him that this is how he should be sitting through therapy! LOL! Drew is such an amazing little boy and doing such a phenomenal job!

This is def. not AV therapy with the focus on visual cues. Drew's speech is excellent and she is teaching him over-articulation which is not natural.

"Anonymous",

You're right, this isn't AVT - this is called Speech Therapy, as the video clearly indicates. Drew speech is excellent, but his IEP has noted several issues with dropping ending consonants (mainly becuase he can't hear them). thus the articulation. No, it isn't natural. But his SLP has to make them with emphasis so that he can HEAR them. I would suggest that, before you comment, you learn all of the particulars of our situation.
