T-Ball Helmets, Meet Cochlear Implants

Drew's t-ball season is in full swing, and our quest to find a batting helmet that will work with his cochlear implants has finally ended! It was very difficult to find a helmet that would not knock Drew's processors off while being put on his head, and with all of the padding in the helmet, it is next to impossible to adjust his processors after the helmet is on (as I typically do with a baseball cap).

After a long shopping trip to our neighborhood Dick's Sporting Goods Store, we found the Adidas Incite Batting helmet, complete with an adjustable dial! This way, we can make the helmet area wider while physically putting the helmet over Drew's processors, and then can tighten the helmet once it is on. This helmet, in conjunction with an Under Armor Skull Cap seemed to do the trick for Drew's game this past weekend.

Thank goodness! If this past weekends excitement is any indication, this boy is gonna be playing ball for years!

That is great! Nolan wants to start playing hockey in the fall. We don't have the issue with the coils, obviously, but hearing aids and helmets can be a pain. I'll have to look and see if they make adjustable ice hockey helmets!

Also, we need pictures of Drew and baseball - I bet he is adorable in his little league stuff!

Thank you for posting this! My daughter has played softball for years and her helmets always fit over her hearing aids just fine, but now she has a cochlear implant in her left ear, and we realized the helmet would be a problem. SO GLAD I google searched and found your blog!

Have any of you heard about Jacob's Ride? Young man with CI about to travel to every Major League ball park in U.S. in order raise $$ for kids/people who need CI surgery but can't afford it?? Most likely coming near or through your area!!

Try this...I posted this several years ago. I'm sure Dick's has changed their offering.

so glad i found this! you are 2 years ahead of us :)
Our daughter was born bilaterally profoundly deaf in 2008 also due to Connexin 26. 1 ear implanted (hopefully 2 soon!)I wish they would have done bilateral implants, but her doctor wound't do it. But no complaints bc she's doing great! Taking kindergarten by storm and hoping to sign up for tee-ball this spring! Thanks for the info re: helmets! Does your son wear the hard helmet both for batting and fielding? I see this post is a few years old - how has he done with baseball? Any advise? Thanks so much!!!

Hi Sara, Drew has worn the same helmet each of the last three seasons. It continues to work really well. He actually only wears the helmet for batting; he wears his baseball hat in the field. He loves baseball (basketball is his favorite sport; baseball is second). We did have a little bit of an issue with him hearing well in the field last year - he was in a more competitive league, and sometimes he couldn't hear his coach. We had a baseball program put on his CI that made the hearing "bubble" much larger and he seemed to do much better with that. We also changed his mic covers frequently from all of the dirt on the baseball fields. Other than that, he's just your average seven year old playing baseball! Good Luck!

thanks so much for the extra tips! I really appreciate it, and love reading your posts! One more question, since you mentioned Drew had some trouble hearing on the field last year - does he wear the FM and the coach use the microphone when he practices/plays? Thanks!!!

My son has hearing aids and the helmet fits fine. The problem we are having is the feedback. What can we do?
